AUGUSTA -- A city man is facing charges after reportedly smashing a car window during a burglary and then fleeing from police on foot.
Randall Lee Brackett, 26, of Augusta, was arrested on charges of burglary of a motor vehicle, violating conditions of release, theft and criminal mischief.
Augusta police Lt. Christopher Massey said a witness called police around 9 p.m. Wednesday after seeing two men around a car parked in the Turnpike Mall parking lot, off Whitten Road. The witness then heard the men break a window in the car and run, Massey said.
Police converged on the area and caught up to Brackett in the woods behind the mall, Massey said.
"We were able to recover about 95 percent of the missing items," Massey said.
Police continue to search for the second man believed to be involved in the burglary.
Massey said the car's door was locked but there were valuable items visible inside. He encouraged drivers to not only lock their car doors when leaving them parked, but also to secure valuables out of sight.
