The victim was taken by a LifeFlight of Maine helicopter to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, where she was expected to undergo surgery, Gardiner Police Chief James Toman said. The woman was shot in the upper torso.

Her condition was not available Friday evening.

Police were questioning a man in connection with the shooting. It is not believed anyone else was in the apartment at the time of the shooting.

"There is absolutely zero risk to the public," Toman said.

The shooting occurred around 2:30 p.m., in a multi-unit apartment building at 25 Washington Ave., which stands at the intersection with Beech Street.

Gardiner police are investigating, along with Maine State Police. No charges had been filed by Friday evening in connection with the shooting.

Toman declined to comment immediately on details of the case. He said investigators expected to the be at the scene for several hours.

Three mailboxes lined the side of the building fronting Beech Street. A Gardiner police officer stood in front of a door at the far end of the building, which was marked with a "3."

A late model Hyundai Santa Fe and an older Honda Accord were parked in the driveway behind a barricade of yellow police tape. An old Ford pickup truck, loaded with odds and ends, was parked across Beech Street, which was closed off with police tape.

Neighbors on the quiet street said they are unsure who lives in the apartment building.

"We all pretty much keep to ourselves," said Sandy Siracusa, who lives a few doors away.
