SEARSMONT — A Vermont man faces charges that he used a sports car to tow a large pickup truck and trailer at the same time, police said.

Todd Jones, 46, of Northfield, Vt., was issued summonses charging him with towing without a tow bar or safety chain and towing more than one vehicle at once, said Maine State Police Trooper Shawn Porter.

Jones was behind the wheel of a Mazda RX-7 about 4 p.m. Jan. 8 when Porter said he came upon the car on Route 3 in Searsmont. Porter noticed a long yellow strap stretched between the Mazda and a 3/4-ton Chevy pickup truck behind it. The pickup truck was, in turn, towing a large trailer, Porter said.

“It was towing it down the road at 35 mph in a 55 mph zone,” Porter said. “It had cars lined up like crazy.”

The pickup truck driver, who was issued a warning, and Jones told Porter that the truck had broken down in Searsport while towing the Mazda, which was loaded on the trailer. The men unloaded the Mazda, which was unregistered, and attached it to the truck and trailer.

“They said they had been driving about 45 minutes,” Porter said.

Porter allowed the men to call a family member in another town who arrived with another truck. The men loaded the broken truck on the trailer and towed the trailer away. They returned later for the Mazda.

Porter said the men understood when told that they could not continue down the road.

“It was very unsafe,” Porter said.
