AUGUSTA — A teenager found hiding under a bed in a Water Street apartment when police executed a search warrant has pleaded guilty to trafficking in heroin.

Stephon James Davis Jr., 16, of New York City, was sentenced this week to 30 days in custody, and will be turned over to New York police after the time is served.

“They are coming to pick him up the day he is released,” District Attorney Maeghan Maloney said Friday. “If he had been given probation, he would have had to stay in Maine.”

By the time he pleaded guilty in court Tuesday, Davis had already served almost the entire sentence. A jail officer previously said that according to a juvenile warrant, Davis had fled a low-security jail in New York.

Davis, found Dec. 14 in a rear bedroom of an apartment rented by Beverly Norton, initially told state drug agents that he was James Davis and provided a birth date in 1993. However, after being taken to Kennebec County jail, he told officers he was 16.

He had no photo ID and did not know his Social Security number, according to a court affidavit by Officer Brian Wastella of the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency.

Davis was born in February 1996, according to records in Augusta District Court.

Wastella’s affidavit, filed in Kennebec County Superior Court when authorities believed the bearded Davis was an adult, says Davis went under the nickname Chicken.

Davis sold 10 bags of heroin to a confidential informant cooperating with authorities on Sept. 27 on Hulin Road in Belgrade Lakes, and another 10 bags on Nov. 7 from Norton’s Augusta apartment. The transactions were recorded.

Davis was originally charged with aggravated trafficking heroin and forgery. The forgery charge was dismissed in exchange for the plea to the other charge, according to court records.

Meantime, a woman arrested and charged with unlawful trafficking in heroin as part of the same multi-agency drug investigation, Amber Swift, 28, of Belgrade Lakes, was back behind bars Thursday night.

Swift, also known as Amber Jones, now is charged with violating conditions of release and unlawful possession of furnishing of heroin, both of which allegedly occurred Thursday.

An affidavit by Wastella in that case says Swift was riding in a vehicle that was stopped on Western Avenue on Thursday. She was in possession of a used hypodermic needle, a spoon and a bagged quantity of powder that tested positive for heroin. She also admitted using heroin, the affidavit said.

A judge in Augusta District Court Friday set bail for Swift at $5,000 cash or $10,000 worth of property.
