Autopsy still pending, identity still unknown of body found in Waterville on Friday

WATERVILLE -- Police still do not know the identity of a male whose body was discovered Friday off Kennedy Memorial Drive.

Police Chief Joseph Massey said Monday that the state medical examiner's office had not yet performed an autopsy on the body, found under some snow behind 295 Kennedy Memorial Drive, the former Avian Farms building.

"He's an adult male, but it's very difficult to tell his age," Massey said. "His condition made it very difficult to guess his age."

Asked whether foul play is suspected in the death, Massey chose his words carefully.

"We haven't ruled anything out and we're hoping the autopsy will give us these types of answers," he said.

Massey said the dead man was dressed in typical winter clothes -- a jacket, pants and boots -- but there was no identification on the body.

"There was a backpack-type item that was located close to the body," he said.

The body was found on the west side of a gravel parking lot near a tree line, he said.

Police checked all recent missing Maine persons bulletins, but with no success.

"We haven't been able to find a report of a missing person that would indicate to us that it might be this person," Massey said.

He said it is unusual that a body is found in the city that is not identified within a short period of time.

An employee of general contractor Gerald Mackenzie discovered the body just before 12:30 p.m. Friday.
