MACHIAS — A farmer-owned organic milk company is on the brink of closing.
Maine's Own Organic Milk, known as MOOMilk, of Machias will suspend production on Sunday.
One of MOOMilk's founders, David Bright, says they're out of money.
The company began with 10 member farmers from Washington, Aroostock and Kennebec counties, but the number has fallen to six. The Bangor Daily News says that threatens the company's ability to produce enough organic milk to remain in business.
MooMilk was formed last year after Hood didn't renew its contract for organic milk with 10 Maine farms.
The organic milk has been distributed to 49 stores in Maine and New Hampshire.
