Man hurt in ride on local lake

WAYNE -- A local man was flown to a Lewiston hospital Saturday after an accident involving his snowmobile on Androscoggin Lake.

Roland Lamontagne was taken by a LifeFlight helicopter to Central Maine Medical Center with head injuries, Game Warden Bob Decker said. He said he thought Lamontagne's injuries were serious, but Readfield Fire Chief Lee Mank said rescuers called for LifeFlight as a precaution.

Decker, who was not reading from a report, was unsure of Lamontagne's age and address. He estimated Lamontagne is in his mid-50s.

Decker also said officials still are trying to determine what occurred and what caused the accident. He said Lamontagne was thrown from the snowmobile and hit his head.

"I'm not sure how that happened yet," Decker said.

Lamontagne was not wearing a helmet, he said.

Wayne's online tax records indicate Lamontagne lives in Wayne on Lakeshore Drive, which runs along the Androscoggin Lake shoreline between Leeds and Wayne.

Decker said Lamontagne owns a business in town, but he was unsure which business. An Internet search indicated Lamontagne owns the Wayne Corner Store.

The accident occurred shortly before 5 p.m., roughly three miles down lake from the Route 133 boat launch in Wayne where firefighters staged for the rescue. Crews from Wayne and the five other Lakes Region Mutual Aid communities -- Fayette, Manchester, Mount Vernon, Readfield and Vienna -- helped with the rescue.

Lamontagne was off the ice within 45 minutes of the crash, said Mount Vernon Deputy Fire Chief Tony Dunn. Lamontagne was taken to the boat launch on a rescue sled towed behind a four-wheeler.

"It was a real good response," Dunn said.
