MaineGeneral owed $38 million by state for MaineCare

MaineGeneral Medical Center is owed $38 million by the state for past years of Medicaid payments, according to hospital spokeswoman Diane Peterson.

MaineGeneral has hospitals in Augusta and Waterville, the Harold Alfond Center for Cancer Care in Augusta and physicians' practices, including the new Musculoskeletal Center in Augusta. It is building a regional hospital in north Augusta that's scheduled to open late next year.

Peterson said Tuesday that the state's back payments have affected the hospital system.

"As a result," Peterson said, "we have to use our line of credit more frequently, our access to additional credit is limited and more expensive, our cash position is weaker, which is of great concern to bond holders and, if not resolved, our future earnings and operations will be negatively affected."
