Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, plans to walk down the aisle

WASHINGTON -- Republican Sen. Susan Collins of Maine is getting married.

Collins, 59, is engaged to Thomas Daffron, a Washington public policy and political consultant.

The couple jointly bought a Capitol Hill townhouse last February. They have been close friends for many years and began dating about two years ago, according to Collins' office.

"Senator Collins and Mr. Daffron are very happy and they look forward to celebrating this wonderful occasion with their families," Kevin Kelley, a Collins spokesman, said Thursday.

Kelley said the couple plan to wed at a small private ceremony in Maine this summer, but a date has not yet been set.

Daffron is not from Maine, but was a chief of staff to former Sen. William Cohen, R-Maine. Collins and Daffron met when both worked for Cohen when he was in the U.S. House in the 1970s.

Daffron has managed or consulted for a number of state and federal campaigns over the years, including for Collins.

This is a first marriage for Collins, and a second for Daffron. They became engaged on Sunday.

Daffron is the chief operating officer for Jefferson Consulting Group in Washington.

The firm does lobbying work, but Daffron is not a registered lobbyist.

According to the consulting group's web site, Daffon "oversees Jefferson's administrative and financial functions as well as the day-to-day operations of the firm. He also applies his extensive media and political experience to help Jefferson Clients attain their business objectives."

Daffron is originally from New York. Collins will maintain a full-time residence in Bangor, her office said.
