Robby Alan Beasley, 29, is being held without bail at the Lake County Jail in California. He was arrested March 6 on a warrant from Kennebec County for probation violation, according to Capt. James Bauman, Lake County's public information officer.

Beasley is a "person of interest" in the deaths of Frank Maddox, 32, and Yvette Maddox, 40, both formerly of Augusta, Bauman said.

Beasley and the Maddoxes had lived in various communities throughout central Maine over the past several years. Autopsies to determine how they died are scheduled for today, Bauman said.

The bodies were discovered down a roadside embankment last Thursday in rural Lake County, Calif., about six miles outside the township of Lower Lake. The bodies were identified Monday.

The Maddoxes had been staying in nearby Clearlake, Calif., for several months, Bauman said. Maine relatives reported Yvette Maddox, formerly Yvette Colon, missing to the Lake County sheriff on Jan. 28. Frank Maddox was reported missing to the Clearlake Police Department on Feb. 11.

Police believe the Maddoxes had been dead for several weeks before they were found.

"Beasley ... reportedly hired the Maddox couple and brought them to Lake County to help him with a marijuana operation," Bauman said.

Detectives believe Beasley convinced the Maddoxes to give him a ride to the Sacramento airport in the last week of January.

"The couple reportedly agreed, despite unverified information that Beasley had previously threatened one of them with a gun," Bauman said.

Beasley was arrested Saturday while police searched two locations where he was known to live, Bauman said. Police found 96 marijuana plants and about $5,000 in cash.

Police continue to look for Frank Maddox's 1982 Toyota pickup, which investigators believe may be connected to the death, Bauman said.

The Maddoxes and Beasley have lengthy criminal histories in central Maine dating back several years.

Published records show members of the Maine State Police tactical team arrested Beasley at his Pittston home in December 2002 after he allegedly fired several shots out of his home and at a guest's vehicle. A 17-year-old girl was injured in the incident.

He also was arrested in October 2005 after a standoff with police in Augusta.

Beasley was indicted in January 2007 for threatening a woman with an AK-47 assault rifle in Vassalboro. He pleaded guilty to criminal threatening and assault and was sentenced to five years in prison, with all but 10 months suspended, and two years' probation.

Beasley also was accused of trafficking in marijuana in 1999 in Gardiner.

Frank Maddox has convictions for unlawful sexual contact in 2001, possession of scheduled drugs and failing to comply with notification requirements of the Maine Sex Offender Registry, Kennebec County District Attorney Evert Fowle said.

Maddox and Beasley were sent to the Maine Correctional Center in Windham in 2007.

"Their sentences overlapped," Kennebec County Sheriff Randall Liberty said Tuesday. "They did share time together."

Yvette Maddox served time in Kennebec County jail after pleading guilty to unlawful drug possession, Fowle said. She was sentenced in September 2005 to three years in jail, with all but 90 days suspended, and two years' probation.

Fowle said Frank Maddox was behind bars in Maine as recently as the fall of 2009.

"He hasn't been out of jail that long," Fowle said Tuesday.

How come I don't get a $75.00 seat belt infraction with all but $10.00 suspended? How many times have we seen offenders repeat their crimes before their first sentence would be served had they stayed where they belonged in this publication alone!? This is happening all over the country and it needs to stop!

The jails have no more room and that's the problem. The jail system isn't working. They just keep building more and more jails at taxpayer expense. Building jails and supplying jails has become a huge business on the backs of the taxpayers.

Well, Jones, there's no room in our jails for the violent, gun totin' crowd. 50% of the space is needed for the drug and alcohol addicted while 40% is reserved for those caught driving after suspension. That only leaves about 10% of available space for those who ALREADY kill people, no room for people who give absolutely every indication they'll someday rape or murder someone. Those people get suspended sentences and probation! I don't know about you but it makes me feel safe knowing a bunch of pot smokers and people who drive after suspension are safely locked up while fine upstanding citizens like Mr. Beasley and company are free to roam as they please!

Another lengthy violent criminal past and yet he was out. No one should die for 95 pot plants. NO ONE. Now for duct taping a 5 year old or machete a family that's another thing.

Hard to feel sorry for anyone in this case except for the people these three affected in so many ways during the past several years. The two guys sound like crime waves, especially with the one being required to register as a sex offender. I feel bad for his victim, but she and her family are probably experiencing a measure of relief upon hearing of his death. Where's the smurf to defend the guy?

On more than one occasion, I have been chastised by the pro medical marijuana crowd with my stand that we need to proceed slowly with how marijuana will be grown and dispensed to those who truly need it for real medical needs. CA has a very active drug cartels that are in control of growing the crop. I wonder how deep into that sleazy world these 3 had fallen? And, do we want that sleazy world growing pot in our back yards? If we are not careful, it will happen here.

Im absolutely disgusted reading these comments. Yes, Frankie and Yvette may have done wrong in the past.. but NO ONE deserves to be killed and dumped in a ditch. They have family and friends who love them very much and will miss them always. RIP Frankie and Yvette

THIS IS AN arguement to legalize pot! When prohibition was the law of the land, murder and corruption related to bootlegging was commonplace. Why? because it was aganist the law! Once it was legal again the states made millions off liquor. Do that with pot! Put the trafficers out of business and tax it to the limit. It could be grown by registered farmers for pennies, controlled and taxed by the state for ..Million$.. Million$ I tell yah! (I don't smoke the stuff, gives me a headache.) BUT alcohol is worse, It destroys a person's health, their profession and their families.
