ALFRED — A former Massachusetts state trooper convicted of rape in Maine is going to prison for 10 years.
Joseph Silva was sentenced today in York County Superior Court to 10 years for gross sexual assault. He was also sentenced to seven years each for two aggravated assault charges, which will be served at the same time as the 10-year sentence.
Silva was convicted by a jury last month. He has been held without bail since the verdict.
WMTW-TV reports that Silva, of Newburyport, Mass., met a Portsmouth, N.H., woman on a social networking website and arranged to meet her for dinner in November 2009.
Authorities say he lured her to a Kittery hotel room under the pretense of watching a Patriots game, but instead sexually assaulted her.
Clarification: An earlier version of this story misstated the amount of time Joseph Silvia will spend in prison. He will serve 10 years.
