LEXINGTON TOWNSHIP — A mechanic’s garage, two sheds and thousands of dollars’ worth of motor vehicles and equipment were destroyed by fire Monday morning on Long Falls Dam Road.

Anson Fire Chief Jeremy Manzer said the property, owned by Kenneth Dunphy, was not insured.

Manzer said firefighters from five area communities saved a neighboring home, a half-mile south of Happy Horseshoe Campground, and prevented flames from getting into nearby woods.

He said the fire started as Dunphy was welding a vehicle inside the 20-by-50-foot steel Quonset hut garage and the vehicle caught fire. The sheds were each 20 by 30 feet, one of them with a second story.

“It was so hot and dry and the heavy winds and being so far away,” Manzer said. “There was no stopping it.”

He said the fire was fueled by oil and gas stored in the buildings.

Dunphy’s home, which is across the road, was not damaged. Dunphy suffered minor burns on his hands, Manzer said. There were no other injuries.

Manzer estimated the financial loss to be more than $200,000.
