Nichols said he expects the transfer to go well.

"We had a good discussion, and I'm expecting a smooth transition," he said.

Nichols, who defeated Pike in the Nov. 6 election, said Pike explained sheriff's office functions including bill paying, payroll and end-of-the-year reports the department submits annually. The two were joined by the new chief deputy, Sgt. Steve Lowell, and current Chief Deputy Raymond Meldrum at the Franklin County Sheriff's Department.

"We're just making sure nothing falls through the cracks during all this," he said.

Pike said he and Nichols, Carrabassett Valley's police chief, have known each other since before the election and have a good relationship. He said he was glad he could be available to explain the department operations.

"We're just glad this isn't Washington politics," he said.

Nichols said Lowell, who works for the sheriff's department, will spend time working beside Meldrum to learn about the chief deputy's position.

The only departmental staff changes will be in the sheriff and chief deputy's positions, Nichols said.

Nichols said he will be sworn in Dec. 28 or 29.
