PRICES AT THE PUMPS

A sampling of gas prices, for regular unleaded, on Tuesday afternoon in Augusta:

* Big Apple Citgo, Civic Center Drive: $3.66

* J&S Oil, Mount Vernon Avenue: $3.66

* Cumberland Farms, Mount Vernon Avenue: $3.67

* Augusta Quik Stop Irving, Western Avenue: $3.69

* Big Apple Citgo, Western Avenue: $3.65

* Valero, Western Avenue: $3.65

* James Weese, Sidney, driving a Chrysler mini-van:

What do you think of current gas prices?

"They're set by the government anyway; there's nothing you can do about it. People still have to go to work. You've got to pay for it, if you're going to go anywhere."

Have the prices affected your driving habits?

"No. I drive to South Portland every day for work. It costs me $150 a week. My fiancée has an SUV; it's hard on gas."

* Mark Drown, Readfield, driving a Toyota Tacoma pickup truck:

What do you think of current gas prices?

"I think we should drill (for oil in America). At least then we'll give it to Americans, other than someone else. Plus, people would get employment out of it."

Have the prices affected your driving habits?

"No -- work pays for it (gas)."

* Skip Decker, Farmington, driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV:

What do you think of current gas prices?

"They're ridiculous -- too high. There's no need for it."

Have the prices affected your driving habits?

"Yeah. We're consolidating trips a little more."
