WATERVILLE -- This Friday, slightly more than two weeks after Spc. Wade A. Slack was killed while serving in Afghanistan, friends and family plan to host a community event to honor Slack and raise money in his name.
The free show, which will feature music and speakers, will be held from about 7:30 to 9 p.m. on the grounds of Waterville Senior High School. Organizers will be accepting donations that will go toward the forthcoming Wade A. Slack Foundation, which will be set up soon to help other families of fallen soldiers.
The show was the brainchild of Slack's sister, Allison, who works in production at Doghouse Studios in Augusta, according to recording studio owner JR Garritt.
"I think the community needs something," Garritt said. "We're doing this event after a weekend of grief, so it will be nice for the community to come together for love and music. Allison is working for us, and it hit so close to home; so it was her idea, and we're just supporting her."
The event will feature local DJ celebrity Steve Galley of Augusta and music by DW Gill, Richie Bartolo, Jason Greene, plus Garritt on guitar and other local musicians.
Speakers also have been invited to the event, and Allison plans to speak and sing backup on a rendition of "Free Bird" by rock legends Lynyrd Skynyrd, Garritt said.
Garritt said the studio is seeking "all available pictures" of Slack that can be used as part of a slide show. Photos can be e-mailed to: jrjarriet@gmail.com.
"People should probably get there as early as possible," Garritt said. "It's about celebrating."
Garritt said anyone interested in participating in the event should call the studio at 660-6669.
