WILTON -- Customers inside Tractor Supply Co. escaped through a cascade of water into freezing outdoor temperatures after a pipe burst in the ceiling over the store's entrance Thursday, according to Fire Chief Sonny Dunham.
The pipe froze and burst after the store lost heat above the front entrance, he said.
Water from the pipe partially collapsed the ceiling and firefighters were called to the store at 9:36 a.m. after an alarm sounded, he said.
Dunham said he did not know how many customers were in the building when the pipe burst, but no injuries were reported.
Dunham said around 20 firefighters from Wilton, Farmington, Jay and East Dixfield responded to the alarm. Many of them helped clear water from the front of the store.
The store on U.S. Route 2 reopened at 4 p.m. Thursday.
Store officials declined to comment.
