Coast Guard wind turbine to power crew housing

SOUTHWEST HARBOR — Days after unveiling the first tidal energy system at a federal facility, the Coast Guard is ready to raise a power-producing wind turbine in Southwest Harbor.

A ceremony planned for today marks a yearlong effort by the Coast Guard to implement various green energy initiatives. The wind turbine will provide power to Coast Guard housing.

A 60-kilowatt tidal turbine launched in March by Ocean Renewable Power Co. is now providing electricity to the Coast Guard Eastport station's 41-foot search-and-rescue boat.

Today, workers in Southwest Harbor will raise a 70-foot turbine that will provide electrical power to homes where Coast Guard crew members and their families live.
