CHELSEA — The town clerk has resigned after six months on the job.

Town Manager Scott Tilton said Cynthia Burnham “got a better job with less hours and more money and benefits.”

Burnham, of Litchfield, was hired in July. She replaced Flavia Kelley, who took personal leave in May 2011. Selectmen chose not to reappoint Kelley after her position had expired June 30, 2011.

Tilton said selectmen will accept Burnham’s letter of resignation at tonight’s meeting, scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Chelsea Elementary School.

“She just had a six-month evaluation and just came off her probationary period,” Tilton said Monday. “Her last day is Jan. 31, but she said she would help out if we needed her during the transition.”

Burnham worked 33.5 hours a week and received $14.50 an hour with health insurance.

Selectmen expect to review the job description for town clerk at tonight’s meeting. Tilton said he advertised the full-time position in the newspaper and the Maine Municipal Job Bank.

“I’ve made a few changes — nothing major — but we want to look at it again to make sure it’s what we want so when we hire a new person, they’ll know what the job is,” he said.

Resumes must be delivered to the Town Office by 4:30 p.m. Feb. 3. Tilton said he already has received six applications for the position.

Selectmen also plan to discuss a request for proposals to print the 2012 town report, changes to street light locations and the purchase and resale of Earth Machine compost bins.

“We’ve looked at our street lights and found there are probably five or six that no longer need to be there and found five or six places where we probably could use some,” he said. “It may not actually save money, but it will make driving safer.”

Tilton said he hopes to appoint an alternate code enforcement officer to fill in until a replacement can be found for Bob St. Pierre, who resigned last month from the part-time position.

“We’ve got some candidates, but we need to conduct second interviews,” he said. “In the meantime, I want to keep the building permits and plumbing permits going.”

Tilton said St. Pierre will be honored during an open house recognition ceremony at 5 p.m. in the Town Office.

In addition, a vacant seat on the school board is still up for grabs.

Tilton said the town is looking for someone to replace Allen Hallett Jr. — who resigned from his school board seat — until June’s annual town meeting and election.

Anyone interested can contact the Town Office or fill out a volunteer application on the town’s website, chelseamaine.org.
