AUGUSTA -- Three cats found shivering and abandoned on the steps outside Kennebec Valley Humane Society in 10-degree weather Friday morning are expected to recover.

The three cats, which shelter staff have named Eva, Fleur and Tilly, were left inside two cages outside the shelter on Pet Haven Lane. The staff doesn't know how long they were outside for and no information, including whether they'd have vaccines or how old they are, was left with them.

Although the cats were cold, they seemed fine after warming up, according to Hillary Roberts, executive director of the shelter. They are expected to eventually be put up for adoption.

"What is so disappointing about this situation is that it was completely unnecessary," Roberts said in a news release. "Seven days a week we have staff available to take in stray or abandoned animals, so there is never a reason for community members to simply dump animals at our facility, particularly when temperatures are so low and could seriously harm these animals or even lead to death."

Farmingdale man

convicted of OUI

AUGUSTA -- A jury on Thursday in Kennebec County Superior Court convicted Scott Andreasen, 60, of Farmingdale, of a charge of operating under the influence.

Andreasen was sentenced to 14 days in jail and one year of administrative release. His license was suspended for 90 days and he was fined $500.

The offense occurred June 11 in Farmingdale.

Pittston Republicans

will caucus today

PITTSTON -- Pittston Town Committee will hold its Republican caucus from noon to 2 p.m. today at the Town Office.

Delegates and alternates to the state convention will be elected.
