Board accepts culvert bid

Cost put at $30,150

FARMINGDALE -- The Selectboard voted Wednesday to award the Park Street culvert- replacement project to C.H. Stevenson, of Wayne, at a cost of $30,150.

Other bids included: Chabot's Construction, of Greene, $57,000; T. Buck Construction, of Auburn, $111,111; Pratt and Sons Inc. of Mechanic Falls, $28,453; McGee Construction, of West Gardiner, $36,369; Manter Construction, of Sidney, $55,500; Harold Warren Construction, of Chelsea, $30,470; and McNaughton Brothers, of Hallowell, $31,800. The 24-inch culvert has a bend in it and a log that is stuck in it. "It's a pretty serious situation. It has to be done," Selectboard Chairman Eugene Moreau said.

Two bids for replacement of the town boiler were opened as well. Dead River, of Hallowell, bid $12,450 to replace the boiler; and Downeast Energy, also of Hallowell, bid $8,544.26. Selectmen decided to review the information presented by each company and plan to award the bid next week. An energy-efficiency grant awarded by the Public Utilities Commission will pay for 90 percent of the boiler installation, which will replace a boiler that is about 25 years old.

Selectman David Sirois told the board that the Planning Board gave preliminary approval this week to B&H Builders to construct a subdivision on Pine Street.

Also Wednesday, selectmen approved a letter to be sent to the Regional School Unit 2 School Board regarding the recent award of bids for snowplowing. Selectmen are concerned that the low bidder was not offered the job for Hall-Dale schools and the central office, costing the Hall-Dale school system $15,000 more.

The bid was awarded to E.C. Barry and Sons, of Farmingdale, at a cost of $64,998.99. The low bidder was McGee Construction, at a price of $49,050. Gray Brothers Grounds Care Inc., of Farmingdale, was awarded the contract last year, and placed the second lowest bid at $59,250.

Selectmen also extended the contract for replacing the Sheldon Street culvert to Oct. 15.
