Woman pleads guilty to embezzling union funds

The Associated Press

BANGOR  — A 58-year-old Maine woman has pleaded guilty to embezzling nearly $30,000 in funds from the union that represents workers at Narraguagus Bay Health Care in Milbridge.

Federal prosecutors say Bernardette Beal used dues money from members of the Downeast Federation of Healthcare Professions on her personal expenses.

She entered the plea last week in federal court in Bangor.

Beal was president of the union local from the 1990s until January 2009.

She was also ordered to pay restitution of $24,131. She's already repaid $5,000.

Beal faces up to five years in federal prison and a fine of up to $250,000. The Bangor Daily News says no sentencing date has been set.
