Capt. James Bauman of the Lake County Sheriff's Department said this week that the deaths of Frank Maddox and Yvette Colon Maddox have officially been classified as homicides.
"The determination is made by the investigating authority, us, based on the investigation, which includes findings from the medical examiner," Bauman said.
The bodies of Frank Maddox, 32, and Yvette Maddox, 40, who had been reported missing in late January, were found March 4 down a roadside embankment in rural northern California. Autopsies showed both had sustained gunshot wounds before dying, Bauman said at the time.
Further tests were needed before investigators could officially determine a causes of death because of the condition of the bodies, Bauman said.
Robby Alan Beasley, 29, formerly of Augusta, remains jailed in California. He was arrested March 6 by Lake County Sheriff Deputies on marijuana cultivation charges and is being questioned in connection with the Maddoxes' death.
Beasley also was being held in California on a warrant from Kennebec County charging him with violating probation by leaving the state without permission. He had been convicted of criminal threatening and felony assault in Kennebec County in June 2007 and remained on probation for those offenses.
Kennebec County District Attorney Evert Fowle said last week that a second warrant was issued, charging Beasley with violating probation by committing new criminal conduct.
"He is still considered a person of interest pending further investigation," Bauman said this week. "We have continued to follow up on leads but nothing further is being released at this time in order to preserve the integrity of the investigation."
