Wreaths to be placed for veterans Saturday in Augusta, Manchester

Area communities will participate in National Wreaths Across America Day.

MANCHESTER — Wreath-layers in Manchester and Augusta will join those in some 800 communities across the country Saturday in placing wreaths on veterans’ graves.

At noon on Saturday, as part of National Wreaths Across America Day, participants across the country will lay wreaths simultaneously as thousands of wreaths donated by a nonprofit organization founded by Morrill Worcester, of Maine’s Worcester Wreath Co., are placed on soldiers graves at Arlington National Cemetery.

In Manchester, starting at 11:15 a.m., participants will gather at the Forks Cemetery, next to the YMCA on Granite Hill Road, to place seven ceremonial wreaths, one for each branch of the service, on the cemetery fence, and 42 wreaths will be placed on individual graves. Ceremonies will then, according to information provided by town officials, move over to the new green space next to the town office, for a dedication of a new flagpole and plaque in honor of Manchester’s veterans.

In Augusta, thousands of wreaths will be placed on veterans’ graves at both the old and new Maine Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery sites on Civic Center Drive and Mount Vernon Road, as well as at Togus National Cemetery.
