WATERVILLE — Police on Monday appealed to the public for help in identifying a man who robbed the KeyBank on Kennedy Memorial Drive recently and fled with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Deputy police Chief Charles Rumsey released additional bank surveillance photos of the robber, asking that people call police at 680-4700 with information that may be relevant to the case, no matter how trivial they think it might be.

The robber, described as a white male between 45 and 55, of average height and medium or heavy build, entered the bank before 4:45 p.m. Thursday and presented a teller a note demanding money, Rumsey said that day. No weapon was displayed, he said.

The robber reportedly left the bank on foot. He was wearing a dark-colored baseball cap and camouflaged winter hat with fur trim and ear flaps, as well as a long, medium-to-dark-colored jacket.
He may have walked some distance to and from the bank, according to Rumsey.

“Kennedy Memorial Drive and the surrounding area is a very high-traffic zone,” Rumsey said in a press release. “We are hoping that folks who may have been in that area any time on Thursday, February 21st, take a close look at the person in the attached photos. If you think you may have seen him, please give us a call.”

Rumsey said Monday that initially police thought the robber may have gotten into a vehicle sometime after fleeing the bank, but he hopes people keep an open mind and report any sightings of him.
Police spoke with a witness who saw the man walking on Kennedy Memorial Drive near KeyBank before the robbery and coming from the direction of Shaw’s Plaza, he said.

Detectives working on the case ask that people or businesses who have money stained red or pink call police, as the bag of money the robber got from the bank contained a dye pack that exploded shortly after he left the building.

“It would stain clothing if it got on clothes; it will stain skin if it gets on skin — how long, it’s hard to say,” Rumsey said.

Rumsey said police have received and are following up on numerous leads in the case.
