AUGUSTA — A Waterville city councilor is free on bail after Augusta police arrested her on a criminal speed charge Monday morning.

Eliza Mathias, 39, of Waterville, was charged with driving at least 30 mph over the posted speed limit during a traffic stop on Bog Road in north Augusta just before 9 a.m., according to Augusta police Lt. Christopher Read.

Mathias was pulled over in a 35 mile-per-hour zone, according to Augusta Police Lt. Christopher Massey.

Mathias  posted the $100 cash bail later Monday morning at the Augusta Police Department, Read said.

Criminal speeding is a class E crime punishable by up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine. Mathias is scheduled to appear in Augusta District Court Jan. 11.

Mathias, a Democrat, represents Ward 6 on the Waterville City Council. The incumbent ran unopposed in November.

Calls to Mathias for comment were not returned Wednesday.
