Update: Route 17 back open after crash

 Route 17 is back open to traffic following an accident this morning that sent an elderly woman to the hospital.

Ruth Payson, 88 of Hope was attempting to turn her minivan left onto Route 17 from Alford Lake Road in Hope at 8:40 a.m. when her vehicle was struck by a dump truck, said State Police Trooper Jeremy Wesbrock. Payson had to be extricated from the vehicle and was taken by medical helicopter to Eastern Maine Medical Center, he said.

 The road, which was closed for several hours, was reopened shortly after noon, he said. State Police and the Knox County Sheriff's Office will continue to investigate the accident.

11 a.m.

An accident involving a car and a dump truck has closed Route 17 in the Knox County town of Hope, state police said.

The accident happened near Alford Lake Road. State Police are reconstructing the accident, according to dispatch. More details will be released later in the day.
