UMaine trustees freeze tuition, fees at 2011 levels

STAFF REPORT

BANGOR — The University of Maine System's board of trustees unanimously approved a budget Monday that will again freeze tuition and fees at the system's seven universities.

Tuition and fees for 2013-14 will remain at the level set in 2011-12, ranging from $7,300 at the University of Maine at Presque Isle to $10,600 at the University of Maine in Orono for a full-time undergraduate student.

"Our trustees are committed to keeping higher education affordable in Maine," Chancellor James Page said in a statement. "With today's decisions, undergraduate students from Maine who were freshmen in 2012 will be paying the same tuition two years later — in their junior year. This is, of course, contingent upon the Legislature maintaining flat funding for the system."

Tuition at the University of Maine at Augusta will remain at $217 per credit hour, which translates to $7,448 in tuition and fees for a full-time undergraduate.

The university system's $528 million budget is about $385,000 lower than this year's. It projects a 0.3 percent increase in enrollment.

The budget calls for staffing cuts of 103.04 positions, plus the addition of 25.05 positions, for a net loss of 77.99 jobs.

UMA will experience a net loss of 14.83 jobs. The University of Southern Maine in Portland will experience the deepest cuts, with a net loss of 43 jobs.
