An 18-year-old Topsham man has been arrested in connection with the firing of a shotgun into a Brunswick apartment Sunday night, Brunswick police said Tuesday.

Police said the shooting, which caused a slight injury to a woman, could easily have been fatal.

Police arrested Brenden Jasper on Monday afternoon and charged him with aggravated assault, reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon, criminal attempt and criminal mischief.

The shooting was in apparent retaliation for an incident that occurred Saturday in Topsham, but Deputy Chief Marc Hagan of the Brunswick police would not elaborate, saying the case is under investigation by Topsham police.

Brunswick police said that at 10 p.m. Sunday, Jasper fired a slug from a .410-gauge shotgun from a car into the window of the apartment at 37 McLellan St., where four people were present.

The shot went through the window, a TV and an interior wall before lodging in another wall.

“Everybody involved was extremely fortunate nobody got killed,” Hagan said.

Glass from the TV caused a minor facial injury to a 20-year-old woman who lives at the house.

Police said Jasper was not the only person in the car and more charges could be forthcoming in the case.

Hagan commended the work of patrol officers and detectives who gathered key information after the shooting and were able to develop Jasper as a suspect. He was arrested at his home at 14 Main St.

Police also recovered the shotgun.

Jasper has been released on $10,000 bail and faces a court date of April 22.
