AUGUSTA — The Tim Hortons restaruant on Bangor Street is one of several around the state closed by the chain in recent days.

A sign on the door Wednesday evening at the 54 Bangor St. location said, “This restaurant has closed. Thank you for being our guest.”

The company sign next to the street, as well as those marking the drive-thru, had been removed and the parking lot was dark. Dim lights inside the store revealed rows of empty shelves.

The sign on the Bangor Street restaurant directs customers to the outlet at 230 Western Ave., which remains open.

The closing is one of several around the state. The Tim Hortons restaurant on Madison Avenue in Skowhegan closed Monday. The Bangor Daily News reported that Tim Hortons restaurants also had closed in Rockland, Portland and Lewiston.

As of June 30, Tim Hortons had 4,300 restaurants, including 800 in 11 U.S. states. About 19 of them remain in Maine.

In 2010 Tim Hortons closed 36 outlets in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Maine, including two in Portland.
