MONMOUTH — An accident that tied up U.S. Route 202 Friday sent three people to a Lewiston hospital.
The drivers, Edith Savage, 80, of Greene and Jeannine Farrington, 65, of Lewiston; and a passenger in Farrington’s van, Andre Gagne, 64, of Lewiston, were all taken by ambulance to Central Maine Medical Center, said Monmouth Police Officer Robert Wells. None of the injuries were believed to be life threatening.
The crash occurred about 11:30 a.m. when Savage, driving a 1997 Chevrolet Lumina, apparently failed to stop at the stop sign at the intersection of Bog Road and Route 202. Wells said Savage, who was turning to head east on 202, pulled in front of Farrington’s east-bound 2003 Pontiac Montana van.
Both of the vehicles suffered significant front-end damage and are likely totaled, Wells said.
Farrington’s van — with air bags deployed — ended up far off the eastbound side of the road, leaving muddy ruts from the tire in a grassy area between Blue Road and U.S. Route 202. The van was packed full with household items.
Savage told police she had come from purchasing flowers on Bog Road.
The section of Route 202 was closed for about 15 minutes. Monmouth firefighters and fire vehicles blocked the east-bound lane for some time after that while clearing the wreckage.
Wells said the investigation is ongoing and may result in charges.
