FAIRFIELD — A 66-year-old Starks woman remains hospitalized after a vehicle hit her and another woman Sept. 15 as they walked along Ten Lots Road in Fairfield.

The driver sped off toward Oakland and later was arrested in Waterville, according to Fairfield police Chief Tom Gould.

The woman, Maxine Wolph-Johnson, suffered a broken hip, broken ribs, wrist and ankle; and her lung was punctured, her husband, David Johnson, 70, said Thursday.

“She still is in a lot of pain; she had surgery yesterday,” David Johnson said by phone Thursday from Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. “She’s probably moving to rehab in Waterville soon.”

Wolph-Johnson has undergone two surgeries and faces weeks of rehabilitation, he said. The other woman walking with Wolph-Johnson, Beverly Poissonnier, 62, of Fairfield was not injured severely.

Soon after the accident, Jeremy Sinclair, 28, of Madison, was arrested on Kennedy Memorial Drive in Waterville in connection with the Fairfield incident. He was charged with aggravated driving to endanger and leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, both class C felonies punishable by up to five years in prison.

Gould said Sinclair, who was driving a 2003 Ford Explorer, told police he was in a rush to get to a medical appointment and did not know he had struck anyone. He was freed on $350 cash bail and faces a Nov. 13 court appearance in Skowhegan District Court.

Gould said the women were walking on the side of the road when Sinclair’s vehicle crossed the center line and hit them.

Both women initially were taken to Inland Hospital in Waterville. Wolph-Johnson later was taken to Bangor by private vehicle.
