FRYEBURG — Fryeburg police reopened a major connector road between New Hampshire and Maine on Monday, nearly 24 hours after the Saco River overflowed its banks and blocked the roadway.
Sgt. Joshua Potvin said one lane of traffic on River Street, which is also known as Route 113, was reopened to traffic around 3 p.m. Potvin said he expects both lanes to be open by Tuesday morning.
Motorists had to take lengthy detour around the flooded area on Monday, he said.
“It is a really heavily traveled road,” Potvin said.
Authorities were forced to close the road from the New Hampshire state line to Route 302 around 3 p.m. Sunday after motorists reported that the road was completely flooded.
Potvin said warm temperatures caused ice jams in the Saco River to melt, which led to the river overflowing its banks.
