WINDHAM — A large cast-iron drainpipe located on the roof of the Dollar Tree store in North Windham snapped Monday night, sending a huge amount of rainwater into the store aisles below.

Deputy Fire Chief Dave Nichols said a thunderstorm with heavy rain had just passed through the Route 302 area when the pipe broke.

The force of the rushing water caused a small section of ceiling tiles to fall into an aisle near the front cash registers but no injuries were reported, Nichols said.

Three employees and an undetermined number of customers were inside the store when the ceiling came down.

“A large amount of their stock was damaged and there was some water damage to the Staples store next door,” Nichols said.

Nichols said it will probably be at least a couple of days before the store can re-open. The Dollar Tree is located at 770 Roosevelt Trail and is part of the Shaw’s Supermarket plaza.

The incident took place around 7 p.m.
