MERCER -- Voters decided to raise slightly more than the $333,179 selectmen recommended, an 11 percent increase over last year’s budget, at the annual Town Meeting Saturday.

Selectman Chris Tibbetts said the meeting went smoothly and quickly with all articles passing with little debate among the 40 attendees during two hours.

Road improvements and maintenance were the highest budgeted items considered. Tibbetts said the town has a high proportion of dirt roads, and residents understand the importance of winter road maintenance and maintaining the infrastructure.

The town approved $85,000 for summer road maintenance and $132,000 for winter road maintenance with most of the funds coming from taxes.

Voters also agreed to sell the North Pond land, a 33-foot by 195-foot vacant lot, to generate town funds.

About 40 votes were cast during elections Friday, Tibbetts said. There were no contested races.

Tibbetts said the property tax rate rose slightly this year and is $14.60 per $1,000 of assessed value. For a house valued at $120,000, the property tax would be $1,752.
