BANGOR — The millionaire founder of Burt’s Bees is exploring other options for the land on which she’d proposed a 70,000-acre national park in northern Maine.
Roxanne Quimby’s son, Lucas St. Clair, says her Quimby Family Foundation wants to listen to stakeholders and talk about the best way to protect the land. He told the Bangor Daily News that the foundation is seeking a plan “representing the wider interests of Maine.”
St. Claire said the park idea isn’t being abandoned altogether, but that it’s just one option.
Her original proposal made sportsmen uneasy because she wanted to ban snowmobiles and hunting.
Spokesman David Barna says the National Park Service remains enthusiastic about the park idea but that the park service has taken no formal stance on her proposal.
