A man died from multiple shotgun blasts outside his home in this coastal community and the accused shooter remained under police guard in a hospital room 20 miles away, police said Friday.
The body of Richard Mills, 48, was found in his driveway Thursday night and an autopsy by the state medical examiner's office concluded he died from multiple shotgun wounds, a spokesman said.
Responding officers took Andrew Kierstead, 40, of Tenants Harbor, into custody shortly after the shooting for questioning and ultimately charged him with murder. He was taken to Pen Bay Medical Center for evaluation and remained there under police guard on Friday.
The two men knew each other, said Steve McCausland of the Maine Public Safety Department, but he declined to say what may have led to the shooting.
"We continue to try to firm up exactly what happened, what sparked the violence. At this hour, we're not getting into any details," he said.
Police also declined to comment on Kierstead's health other than to say that he was not injured but was suffering from an undisclosed medical problem.
