Authorities arrest Maine slaying suspect In Florida

From staff and wire reports

KEY WEST, Fla. — A Maine man wanted in the killing of his roommate has been arrested in Key West, Fla.

The Maine Attorney General's Office confirmed today that Michael Young of Augusta has been detained. Last month, the attorney general issued a warrant for Young's arrest.

Young was wanted in the stabbing death of 46-year-old David Cox, an Army veteran.

Neighbors at the time said said the two men fought frequently.

Maine State Police had alerted Florida officials that Young might be in the area, and he was arrested Thursday night. A spokeswoman for the Maine Attorney General's Office says extradition is being arranged.

Cox was found dead Saturday, June 11, 2011, inside the 12 Green St. apartment he shared with Young.

Neighbors at the time said a volatile relationship had developed between Cox and Young, and one neighbor described such an outcome as "inevitable."

Police have previously declined to classify the incident as a crime and said at the time that Young was cooperating with the investigation and was not described as a suspect.

Young called 911 early the morning of June 11 to report Cox's death.

Augusta police arrested Young two days later on two outstanding warrants charging failure to pay fines on convictions for unlawful possession of scheduled drugs and operating without a license. He was released after being given time to pay the fines.

Authorities at the time said that Cox died of a stab wound to the chest and that he was an Army veteran who had moved to the state about two years ago. He served in the Army from 1986 to 1988 and received an honorable discharge.
