ALTON — Maine State Police say the deaths of a man, his estranged wife and his friend were a murder-double suicide, and that the husband underwent a mental health evaluation two days before the violence occurred.
Authorities previously said 43-year-old Scott Reed stabbed his 39-year-old wife, Danielle, then shot himself. Their bodies were found in their Alton home on Nov. 19, along with that of 41-year-old Daniel Young of Bradley.
State police spokesman Stephen McCausland told the Bangor Daily News on Sunday that investigators have determined Young shot himself. He says Young and Scott Reed had made a suicide pact.
McCausland says Reed was sent to a hospital for the mental health evaluation on Nov. 17 after damaging his wife's car and telling police he was suicidal. But he was released later that day.
