Standoff yields charges for Pittston man

PITTSTON — A local man who reportedly created an hourslong standoff with police at his East Pittston Road home last week is facing a litany of charges.

Daniel Williams, 59, is charged with terrorizing, leaving the scene of a property-damage accident, failure to report an accident by quickest means and creating a police standoff, according to a release by Maine State Police.

Williams was taken into custody shortly before midnight on Nov. 26 after a nine-hour standoff that eventually included a State Police Tactical Team and negotiators. He was initially taken to MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta for evaluation and treatment of self-inflicted injuries.

There were no other injuries in the standoff, which began that afternoon after Williams reportedly crashed his truck. He reportedly left the crash scene and went to his home, where he was found by Trooper Erin Ball. Williams told Ball he would not come out and threatened to shoot the trooper if she went inside the mobile home, according to the police report.

Williams refused to talk to police or leave his home during the standoff. He surrendered around 11:30 p.m. and was taken to the hospital. Williams subsequently was charged in connection with the standoff and crash.

Deck collapses, injuring two

AUGUSTA — Two people were hurt Tuesday when a deck gave way at a Fowler Street apartment.

Deputy Chief David Groder, of the Augusta Fire Department, said the two men, whose names were not released, suffered injuries that were not life-threatening. One of the men complained of back and neck pain and was taken to the Alfond Center for Health by ambulance. The second man suffered a leg injury and went to the same hospital via a private vehicle.

A dog who was on the deck at the time of the collapse was not injured, Groder said.

One of the injured men was a tenant in the building. The other was a visitor.

The collapse occurred around noon at 10 Fowler St. The men were standing on the first-floor deck, elevated about three feet off the ground, Groder said. The deck collapsed to the ground, taking the men with it.

Groder said the apartment entry has been taped off until the deck can be repaired. Plans for that repair were already underway a few hours after the collapse, Groder said.
