STAFF REPORT
PALERMO — Voters here on Friday began the process of withdrawing from Regional School Unit 12 and replaced an incumbent selectman.
Voters decided 103–35 to spend $15,000 to study how to withdraw from RSU 12, which includes Alna, Chelsea, Palermo, Somerville, Westport Island, Whitefield, Windsor and Wiscasset.
Voters also decided to replace Paul Cowing on the Board of Selectmen with Cheryl York. Cowing garnered 60 votes; and York, 77.
The annual Town Meeting resumes today with public debate and voting.
Cowing was seeking a third term on the board. York, business manager at Erskine Academy, won her in first run for office.
In December, Palermo voters approved a ballot question to begin the withdrawal, but the vote was disqualified because it was not taken by secret ballot. The town joins Wiscasset and Westport Island, which already have begun the withdrawal process.
