WATERVILLE — The financial shortfall announced by Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor Thursday will not have an impact on Inland Hospital in Waterville, a spokeswoman said.
Although the two hospitals are affiliates of Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems, they operate separately, said spokeswoman Sara Dyer. She said the financial shortfall announced by the Bangor hospital will not affect Inland in Waterville.
On Thursday, EMMC released a statement on its website saying that decreases in annual reimbursements from Medicare and Medicaid along with an increase in free care and bad debt have contributed to a “significant financial shortfall.”
In the last year the hospital has had a $10 million decrease in Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements and has experienced $27 million in free care and bad debt, according to the statement.
Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems is a network of health care providers that use collaborative buying power to minimize expenses and also share specialty resources, according to its website. There are eight member hospitals and numerous other affiliates, including ambulance services, nursing homes and retirement communities.
