Not all municipal offices were flooded with business Saturday by same-sex couples seeking marriage licenses.

While lines formed at some of the city and town offices that held special hours Saturday for same-sex couples to obtain marriage licenses, other communities are seeing much less business than they had anticipated on the first day the new marriage law went into effect.

In Augusta, which opened for marriage licenses between 9 a.m. and noon, only three couples had shown up by 11 a.m.

“This is much less than expected. I am surprised, I had guessed around 10,” said Barbara Wardwell, city clerk.

In Freeport, which is holding special hours between 9 a.m. and noon Saturday, for all town business, two couples had taken out marriage licenses by 11:15 a.m.

“I didn’t know what to expect,” said Tracey Stevens, town clerk.

She said one other person had come into her office to obtain a dog license.
