AUGUSTA — The Kennebec Valley Tennis Association is holding an open house Saturday for its soon-to-be-opened indoor tennis center on Leighton Road.

The public is invited to stop by the 23 Leighton Road tennis and sports center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to see the progress that has been made and meet the director, Hans Römer, along with the board of directors and others who have been active in the project, according to a release from the association.

The association expects to announce an official opening date soon. It plans to host a grand opening gala March 22, according to the release.

Talk of bringing back indoor tennis began shortly after Ascona Tennis & Health Club closed its doors at the location around six-and-half years ago. The association signed a five-year lease last year for the former tennis center.

Near the end of December, the association was $20,000 short of its goal of $300,000, with money raised from gifts and pledges from more than 100 individuals and families, 13 businesses and one foundation.
