Neighbors fondly recall man killed in hunting mishap

SEBAGO — The Maine Warden Service continues to investigate a weekend hunting fatality that took the life of a husband and father from Sebago.

Peter Kolofsky, 46, who lives not far from where he was shot off Hogsfat Hill Road Saturday afternoon, was remembered today by friends as a person who worked hard on behalf of his family and was generous with neighbors.

"He was a great guy, a hard-working regular joe," said Jeffrey Harmon, a neighbor. "He was a family man and a great neighbor."

Kolofsky worked as a logger and carpenter and as a commercial fisherman. He was fond of the outdoors and enjoyed hunting.

A celebration of his life will be held Thursday, for 6 to 8 p.m. at Watson Funeral Home in Cornish.

Kolofsky died after being shot by William Briggs, 61, of Windham. Authorities say the shooting appears unintentional and that there is no indication Briggs was impaired, but they will investigate the circumstances of the shooting to determine whether Briggs should be charged for not exercising adequate caution.
