NH motorist dies after swerving to avoid bear

HOPKINTON, N.H. — New Hampshire State Police say a 24-year-old motorist died after swerving to avoid a bear that had been struck by another vehicle and killed on Interstate 89 in Hopkinton.

Police say a pickup truck traveling north early Tuesday first hit the black bear just before Exit 5. Later, the driver of a Subaru station wagon swerved to avoid the bear's body and ended up in the median, where the car landed on its passenger side.

The driver, identified as Jesse Amador of Hooksett, N.H. was taken to Concord Hospital, where he died from his injuries. Police say they tried to revive Amador at the scene before he was taken to the hospital.

The accident caused a traffic tie-up on the highway.
