FARMINGTON — A local man who was injured severely after he fell 40 feet from the roof of a University of Maine at Farmington building was charged with criminal trespass and criminal mischief, according to campus police.

Devon Pease, 21, of Farmington, was summoned Tuesday evening and police were unsure when he was discharged from Maine Medical Center in Portland, Interim Chief Brock Caton said in an email Wednesday.

Caton said police were also unsure why Pease and another man were on the building.

Pease fell from the Emery Community Arts Center while trying to escape from police after he and Joshua Farthing were spotted early Sept. 3 on the roof of a university gymnasium.

The two are not UMF students, Caton said.

The second man, Farthing, 25, of Panama City, Fla., was summoned on a charge of criminal trespass and released after the Fire Department used a ladder truck to help him get off the building.

The two men were spotted by police on Dearborn Gymnasium’s roof. Caton said they ignored police orders to get down from the building and instead ran onto the roof of an attached building.

Pease tried to climb down, but lost his grip and fell 40 feet to the pavement. He was taken to Franklin Memorial Hospital and later transferred to Maine Medical Center.
