SEARSPORT — The Maine Cooperative Extension is helping to put on a farming clinic but it won’t be focusing on blueberries, potatoes or other crops grown in the soil. Instead, this one is focusing on seaweed.
The extension is joining Maine Sea Grant in hosting Thursday’s workshop on seaweed aquaculture science in Searsport. It’ll be followed by a three-hour class on kelp-farming techniques.
The class will be taught by leading industry members from the Portland-based commercial kelp farm Ocean Approved and University of Connecticut scientists. Using techniques developed with UConn researchers, Ocean Approved has been farming native kelp on the Maine Coast for three years.
