Judge lets man who caused flight diversion go home

BANGOR — A federal judge is allowing a man accused of causing a trans-Atlantic flight to be diverted to Bangor to return to his Florida home.

Magistrate Judge Margaret Kravchuk today modified bail conditions for Derek Stansberry, who has been living with his girlfriend's family in Matamoras, Pa. Eventually, he'll be allowed to return to Riverview, Fla.

Prosecutors say Stansberry passed a note to a flight attendant that said he had a fake passport and told federal air marshals that he had dynamite aboard a Paris-to-Atlanta flight on April 27.

Defense lawyer Walter McKee says there was "something going on with him psychologically that day." Stansberry had held a top security clearance and received an honorable discharge from the Air Force.
