PORTLAND - Maine politicians and small business owners gathered in Portland on Patriots Day to send a message to President Obama: “Hope you like the beer.”

Paul Drinan, left, media coordinator, and store owner Bill Milliken carry a basket of assorted Maine microbrews, along with assorted other Maine products from the Portland Market House, out to a car at Monument Square where it will begin it's journey to President Obama Monday, April 19, 2010. (Jill Brady/Staff Photographer)
The message was accompanied by a giant basket filled with more than a dozen bottles of beer, made by Maine brewers, to be sent to Obama for his personal enjoyment.
The presidential beer delivery was the idea of Bill Milliken, an owner of the Maine Beer and Beverage Corporation, who Obama referred to by name during his televised speech on health care at the Portland Expo on April 1. Obama cited Milliken as a Maine small business owner who will be able to provide more of his workers health insurance because of tax credits in the new health reform law.
Obama also, in a not too subtle way, asked for some beer.
“In exchange for this publicity, I hope that I’m going to get some samples of beer,” Obama said to the crowd.
On Monday, a send-off for the beer was held at the Public Market House in Monument Square, where Maine Beer and Beverage is located. The crowd included a dozen or so representatives from Maine beer companies, Gov. John Baldacci, U.S. Representative Chellie Pingree, Portland Mayor Nicholas Mavadones, and a dozen or so media members, other local business owners, and a couple dozen onlookers.
Milliken told the crowd he was happy to help get recognition for Maine small business owners, as they work to help the state’s economy and better conditions for their employees. He also said he felt like organizing the beer basket for Obama was simply his civic duty.
“When the president calls, I answer. How could I say no?” asked Milliken.
Milliken said he thought it was fitting the beer send off was being held on Patriots Day, since well-known patriot Benjamin Franklin was supposedly famous for saying that beer is “proof that God loves us.”

outrageous ... anywhere but Chicago and DC, accepting a "gift" in exchange for a favor is called CORRUPTION. a de minimus infraction or indicative of a culture where this is tolerated normal and overlooked. "how cute!!" they will coo. no, that's not cool. obama may have been fooling around, but he cannot accept a gift, nevermind in exchange for a "shout out." expect a federal ethics complaint if you think overt favors, gifts, whatever semantics you'd like to use - of any degree - like this are the way government should work.

The beer will go in a museum somewhere, not that it should IMO, but it will, the President can't accept gifts like that for personal use, even if it does fall below the minimum value thresholds.

Criticizing the President over a gift basket of beer? Seriously? Just when I think the Obama-haters can't possibly get any more pathetic, spiteful, and petty, they manage to stoop even lower. In 2007, President Bush "received at least 20 [gifts] worth a total of $12,364, according to the financial disclosure forms the president and vice president are required by law to file each year...There is no limit on the size of gifts a president or vice president can receive from a U.S. citizen. They must report only those valued at $305 or more — as well as multiple presents over $100 from the same giver, if their cumulative total exceeds $305." http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/05/16/politics/main2812310.shtml

As a Mainer and an optimist, I'm a personally offended by all the negativity here. This about Maine businesses getting their names out there, boosting our economy, and being able to provide for the good people of Maine who work hard every day. If Obama had gone to a bakery he'd be getting a muffin basket, but he didn't, and he's getting beer. And I'm pretty sure the last time I checked the age requirements for legal drinking and presidential office are both well above 21 years. Let him have some beer, and get one for yourself too. Maybe you'll meet someone interesting in a bar and have an intelligent conversation for once. Maybe your glass will be half full...

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A CONSERVATIVE AND A LIBERAL If a conservative doesn't like guns, they don't buy one. If a liberal doesn't like guns, then no one should have one. If a conservative is a vegetarian, they don't eat meat. If a liberal is, they want to ban all meat products for everyone. If a conservative sees a foreign threat, he thinks about how to defeat his enemy. A liberal wonders how to surrender gracefully and still look good.

Sandman, You neglect to count the days off that Bush had, which was unprecedented. This is a typical Republican ruse that they sequenced on right wingnut talk radio yesterday. The fact of the matter is that President Obama is extremely hard working. By the way, Sean Hannity criticized President Obama for not attending the funeral of the President of Poland. He never mentioned why ... which is typical of righ wingnut "news," they deceive their own "kind," don't let facts get in the way ... President Obama didn't attend the funeral of the Polish President because of the huge ash cloud that clogged air travel across Europe. Or didn't they bother to mention that on Fox "Republican" News. Hannity couldn't be bothered. This begs the question of how willfully ignorant people have to be to swallow Republican tripe day in and day out. The answer: VERY.

I don't believe he always knew what was going on nor put alot of effort into what he was trying to achieve. He took many, many vacations. MANY ! I think he took too many compared to Obama who has much more common sense than Geo W and deserves vacation time.
