Maine Turnpike lowers speed limit to 45 mph

The Maine Turnpike Authority has lowered the speed limit over the entire stretch of the highway to 45 mph.

Snowy conditions, on the heels of the weekend blizzard, have worsened driving conditions on the turnpike. However, state police report only a few cars sliding off the road and no major traffic tie-ups or injuries.

The speed reduction was declared at about 10 a.m. for the southern stretch of the highway between Kittery and Falmouth, but by 11 a.m. the reduction was declared for the entire roadway.

The National Weather Service has declared a winter weather advisory until 6 p.m. and says southern Maine can expect 2 to 4 inches of snow with a coating of ice. The snow will switch to mixed precipitation with sleet and freezing rain and eventually rain.
